- High speed net connectivity in all panchayats in state by march ‘19
- The Government has gone ahead with the second and final phase of the Centre’s ambitious Bharat Net project aimed at taking high speed internet connections to last mile in Jharkhand. Under the project, every panchayat of the State would be equipped with the facility by March 2019.
- Notably, the Government under ‘Digital Jharkhand’ initiative is already working on the project in 13 districts of Jharkhand where work is at a very advanced stage. “11 new districts namely Gumla, Simdega, West Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharsawan, Pakur, Khunti, Godda, Dumka, Jamtara, Chatra and Garhwa have been included for rolling out the Bharat Net project to provide high speed net connectivity up to panchayat level. The Cabinet has sanctioned Rs 420.44 crore for the second phase which is to be completed by March 2019.
- In the second phase, total 4,403 gram panchayats would be covered with internet connectivity making the functioning and implementation of schemes easier and accessible to all with full transparency.
- The Cabinet, at the same time, approved Jharkhand Skill Development policy which is aimed to provide skill training to at least five lakh youths. “The policy would define action plan for opening number of mega skill development centres, their locations, trades, mode of their operation such as Government, PPP or industry etc.
- Rs 2655.81 crore has been approved for building 26 grid substations and doubling of 132/33 kva transmission lines. Agriculture Minister Randhir Singh said that 70 per cent of the cost would be met by the World Bank loan and the rest would be funded by the State Government.
- Also, the Cabinet promulgated Jharkhand Motor Vehicle Taxation Ordinance which would allow issuing permits for plying sleeper buses from Jharkhand to other states. Earlier, such permits were issued by other states for the buses coming to the State.
- The Cabinet also decided to set up Jharkhand Authority of Advanced Ruling which is mandatory under the GST regime. This would work as a tribunal where disputes and claims can be settled at the State level.

- CPN-UML chairperson K P Sharma Oli has become Nepal’s Prime Minister for the second time.
- President Bidhya Devi Bhandari appointed 65-year-old Oli as the country’s 41st prime minister.
- Oli, who is known for his pro-China stance, had served as the country’s prime minister from October 11, 2015 to August 3, 2016.
- Earlier, former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba had addressed the nation and submitted his resignation to the president.
- Cyril Ramaphosa elected President of South Africa
- Cyril Ramaphosa has been elected as South Africa’s new president by ruling party legislators after the resignation of Jacob Zuma.
- Ramaphosa was the only candidate nominated for election in the parliament after two opposition parties said they would not participate.
- Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng presided over the parliamentary election.
- The country’s 400-member parliament, dominated by the ruling African National Congress Party (ANC), elected Ramaphosa to finish his predecessor’s term, which ends with elections in 2019.

- Prime Minister to inaugurate World Sustainable Development Summit 2018
- The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, will inaugurate the 2018 edition of the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS 2018) at VigyanBhawan in the capital on 16thFebruary.

- Centre to change base year for GDP, IIP to 2017-18
- The government will change the base year to 2017-18 for the calculation of GDP and IIP numbers while for retail inflation the year will be revised to 2018, Union minister D V Sadananda Gowda said.
- The statistics ministry has proposed the new base year for GDP and IIP as 2017-18 while for CPI it will be 2018.
- The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) has been allocated Rs 4,859 crore in the Union Budget 2018-19.

- The Supreme Court is delivering its verdict on the decades-old Cauvery river water dispute casebetween the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala.
- A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud had on 20 September last year reserved the verdict on the appeals filed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala against the 2007 award of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal (CWDT)on sharing of water.
