3 districts to maintain smoking-free district tag

Commemorating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi; Jharkhand government in a quick succession announced three districts as smoking-free districts claiming that the third-party survey has suggested 90 per cent compliance of provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003.

In 2018 also Ranchi district administration had planned to declare the district as smoke free on the occasion of birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. But due to two high-profile visits — that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and vice-president M. Venkaiah Naidu — and the launch of Ayushman Bharat health scheme district administration could not organize any formal programme.

That time also a third-party field survey was commissioned in six districts — Ranchi, East Singhbhum, Bokaro, Hazaribagh (urban), Dhanbad and Ramgarh — between November 2016 and April 2018. The survey had suggested 90 per cent compliance in rural and urban Ranchi.
